Alberta’s Business Person of the Year Award Luncheon

The 15th Annual Alberta Business Person of the Year luncheon was a major success! Please stay tuned for pictures from the event and Nancy’s keynote speech!

Join Alberta Venture, the Chartered Accountants of Alberta, MacPherson Leslie & Tyerman LLP and Alberta’s business elite on Wednesday, January, 25, 2012 as we honour Nancy Southern, President, CEO & Deputy Chair, ATCO Ltd. and Canadian Utilities Ltd. as one of Alberta’s most recognizable leaders. Chosen for her leadership, business savvy, passion and commitment to the community, Nancy exemplifies the definition of success in the corporate world. Network with influential decision-makers and be inspired by her keynote address, “Canada’s Opportunity in 2012 and Beyond.”

Nancy Southern led ATCO to its best-ever year in 2010, but her core vision is to build an organization that can endure with strong, sustainable growth over the long-term. Her vision includes an organization that fully respects and honours the contributions of the people who work for the company. Her ability to listen and to seek input from all levels has led to new processes, business refinements and opportunities. “Nancy is a natural agent of commerce and enterprise,” says former deputy prime minister and current ATCO board member Don Mazankowski. “I’m impressed by her stellar performance as CEO. Her style and vision is such that it augurs well for the future success of the company.”

Southern’s leadership has exemplified the characteristics of integrity, honesty and determination, and is at once inclusive and decisive. “Right from the start she has shown self-confidence and great judgement,” says Bill Downe, president and CEO of the Bank of Montreal. “Nancy has a natural, intuitive sense of business and a terrific ability to relate with people. She has a very easy way of thinking about the point of view of whoever she’s dealing with. It’s a combination of insight and empathy.”

This year, Nancy Southern has turned ATCO into a global powerhouse with the $1 billion purchase of Western Australia Gas Networks, now ATCO Gas Australia. Negotiations were long and tough, but the deal has set ATCO on a course of stable growth for years to come.

1. Briefly describe your company and explain why you believe it is Alberta’s Contractor of the Year.

In their 30th year of business Thermo Design Insulation Ltd has not only become Canada’s leader in the supply and installation of Insulated Metal Panels but also the leader in North America.

With our Values of Safety and Employees First we have been able to develop a culture that breeds entreprenurial spirit and growth. We have been able to grow the company from a single branch low temperature insulation company to now a national provider of insulated metal panels, low temp insulations, specialty finishes with 7 branches in 5 provinces in Canada.

2. What have been the three most important contributing factors to your company’s success over the past two years? Please explain how they have been integral to your success.

The top 3 would be:

Employees Expertise

Entreprenurial Spirit

Hard Work

We are now moving to an employee ownership model with the Rantucci family as the majority shareholders. This allows new employees the opportunity to share in the success of the business.

We have been able to establish a great base in the past 30 years from which to grow the company and it’s presence in the marketplace.

We encourage employees to be involved in the community and industry. Recently Conal Hancherow, Manager, Business Development was elected to the Edmonton Construction Association Board.

3. Describe (what, why, how) and provide examples of Alberta based projects completed in 2010 or 2011 which were delivered on budget and within schedule. Identify projects that possessed unique challenges and explain how you overcame them.

Our companies core business is the supply and installation of insulated metal panels in the food distribution/production market.

In this market we have been involved in the Walmart Distribution Centre in Balzac AB which was 400,000 square feet of footprint. This was a fast tracked job that SODCL (Sturat Olson Dominion Construction) had to rely on expert sub trades to ensure the job was on time and on budget.

Our company has been involved in many of the large industrial warehousing jobs in Alberta. Dawson Wallace’s recent completion of the WAM 4 warehouse building in Stony Lands in Calgary is a signal that the Alberta Market is alive and well economically.

The insulated metal panels that Thermo Design works with are a product that many owners and governments are now noticing. This product is light weight , energy efficeint and has a long life cycle. Developers and owners a like have used the product to form their building envelope to ensure that their impact on the environment is minimized.

The City of Edmonton recently used the panels to form the walls on the new Terwillegar Quad arena in Edmonton. There was a great deal of scrutiny on this project to ensure that the taxpayers got the best building possible. And that they did , this building is a showpiece not only for the City of Edmonton but also for recreation construction in Canada.
